Brooklyn Nets Receive: G/F Evan Fournier, G/F Cam Reddish, 2023 First-Round Pick (Top 10 Protected – MIA)
New York Knicks Receive: G Kyle Lowry, G Max Strus
Miami Heat Receive: G Kyle Lowry
Both of New York’s teams are heavily featured in trade rumors this summer. With that said, this isn’t exactly the potential deal everyone is talking about.
The Knicks are widely expected to make a run at Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell. Here’s the thing: this trade should benefit them whether or not that happens.
New York is mainly involved here to clear future cap space. Yes, Lowry makes more than Fournier, but his deal is one year shorter. He’ll be on an expiring contract in 2023-24, which should make him easy to trade. Whether the Knicks are clearing space for a star, or Mitchell’s co-star, that’s a benefit.
Meanwhile, if they did land Mitchell, Lowry could be a perfect running mate for him. While he’s 36 and potentially in decline, it’s fair to say that Lowry will at least hustle on defense and space the floor. Those are both skills that will complement Mitchell.

Finally, the Nets still get their pick, and a flyer on Cam Reddish at the same time. Fournier’s contract is a burden, but that’s the cost of rostering a distressed asset like Irving.
