Miami Heat Expected To Pursue Kyrie Irving This Offseason

Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets seem headed towards an inevitable breakup this NBA offseason, brought along by Irving’s lack of commitment to basketball and the Nets’ anxiety to tie themselves to Irving with a long-term contract.

Irving is reportedly seeking a maximum extension and while Brooklyn is willing to pay him his most eligible money, they’d prefer to keep his deal shortened and retain flexibility should he decide he’s no longer interested in basketball.

Another team has allegedly thrown their hat into the ring, though. According to Marc Stein, the Miami Heat are considering bringing on the seven-time All-Star.

Miami is believed to have some level of interest in joining the chase for Irving — should the Nets reach the point of actively trying to trade him — and would figure to be a more legitimate landing spot than the teams initially mentioned given the Heat’s various trade assets. While it certainly ranks as another strain on the imagination to try to picture Irving finding daily comfort in Pat Riley’s rigid South Beach operation, it’s likewise true that the Heat have never shied away from the starriest of stars or personalities painted as challenging.

As a result, it appears that Kyrie Irving may be made available for trade, even if means that the Nets may lose Kevin Durant in the process. Irving’s already reported to have a few suitors including the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Each of those title hopefuls could certainly use his unmatched offensive creativity and ability to get himself a good shot on virtually any given possession. Each also hopes to be the team that can get him to rededicate himself to the game of basketball.

The Miami Heat were a possession away from making their second NBA Finals appearance in three seasons, and the one glaring hole on their roster is a bona fide shot creator and self-starter on offense.
