Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
The Phoenix Suns have reasons to make this trade that exist both on and off the basketball court.
We’ve touched on the on-court justification already. Offensively, Myles Turner is shooting 34.9% from three-point range throughout his career. By contrast, Ayton’s range barely extends outside of the key.
Defensively, Ayton is actually a little more versatile, but Turner is a clearly superior rim protector. Nobody’s saying that Turner is a more impactful player than Ayton, but they’re probably roughly equals.
Swapping Ayton for Turner simply gives the Suns a new look. Their backcourt tandem of Chris Paul and Devin Booker ought to thrive within their newfound driving lanes. The Suns may miss Ayton’s rebounding and defensive versatility, but they’ll welcome Turner’s floor spacing and rim protection.
