Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
The Miami Heat could also justify declining this trade. After the 2021-22 season they just wrapped up, they don’t need to make massive changes.
The Heat advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals this season. That’s an outstanding finish. At the same time, they could regret banking on internal improvement to take them further in 2022-23.
After all, Jimmy Butler is on the wrong side of the aging curve. Bam Adebayo is on the right one, but nobody should be shocked if he’s peaked. Of course, Herro could make strides. The question is, is he likely to improve to the point that he’s more impactful than Donovan Mitchell?
It’s doubtful. As talented as Herro is, he’s got considerably growing to do before he reaches Mitchell’s level. In fact, it may be more growth than he can realistically manage in one off-season.

The Heat would be doubling down the present here. With that said, the addition of Mitchell dramatically increases the odds of that present culminating in an NBA championship in 2022-23.
