Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
Let’s assume that the Utah Jazz see Tyler Herro as a comparable, but ultimately lesser player than Donovan Mitchell. Does this deal still make sense?
After all, it’s obviously not a Mitchell-for-Herro swap. The Jazz can get a better deal than that for Mitchell. It’s the sweeteners that could make this deal worthwhile.
Herro and two unprotected first-round picks in exchange for Mitchell feels like market value. The Jazz would be banking on Herro becoming a cornerstone of this tea, but they’d probably be equally assuming that he won’t be the team’s centerpiece as Mitchell was.
That’s fine. The Jazz will be committed to a long-term rebuild following this deal. If Herro can be the second-best player on their next competitive team, they’ll have done well in this exchange.
