Recent NBA insider reports that Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets are “at an impasse” in contract negotiations should surprise nobody.
It’s not hard to see the rock or the hard place in this situation. Irving is one of the most talented players in the NBA, so surely he feels entitled to big, long-term money.
On the other hand, making a long-term commitment to a player who doesn’t appear committed to the sport is understandably difficult for the Nets. Irving’s frequent absences have got to have them wondering how often he’ll be available to play basketball moving forward.
It’s a risk. If the Nets’ front office decides they have to take it, that’s understandable. If they decide they can’t, that’s also fair.
