Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Kyrie Irving
Brooklyn Nets Receive: F/C Anthony Davis
A comparison of the seasons Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis had this year is like a case study of all the ways a year can go wrong for an NBA player.
As mentioned, Irving refused the COVID-19 vaccine. Leaving politics aside, it seems fair to say that Irving had the power to play.
You could say that he chose not to, or you could say that he made a choice that forced him not to. On the other hand, you couldn’t say that he didn’t have a choice.
Anthony Davis did not. Injuries kept him on the sidelines for much of 2021-22. They seemed to limit his effectiveness when he did take to the floor. It seems fair to say that if he’d had a choice, the year would have gone differently for Davis.

It’s funny how different processes can lead to the same results. Neither the Lakers nor the Nets could rely on their star players in 2021-22. The reasons may have been different, but the outcomes were identical.
Could these two sides hope that either Davis or Irving would have a different 2022-23 season in a different uniform?
