Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Larry Bird are two of the greatest players to ever lace up sneakers and play in the NBA. It had to be a wild experience for Indiana State center Robbie Avila to earn nicknames based on those all-time greats.
Dubbed Cream Abdul-Jabbar and Larry Blurred by social media, Avila became an overnight sensation. With his goggles and body type reminiscent of local YMCA runs more so than a D1 college athlete, he captured the attention of many.
The Indiana State star took the basketball world by storm during the 2023-24 season. He was an integral part of the Sycamores going 32-7, reaching the 30-win plateau for the first time since Bird was suiting up for them before his illustrious career with the Boston Celtics in the NBA.
However, as the old adage goes, all good things must come to an end eventually. In this instance, it is Avila playing for Indiana State. He took to X this week to announce his intentions to enter the transfer portal in a heartfelt message to the school, fans and his family.
NBA NEWS & SCORES: Robbie Avila, 2024 NCAA Transfer Portal, Indiana State Sycamores Updates
There should be no shortage of interest in Avila in the transfer portal. For all of the viral memes and things that have been shared on social media, that has all stemmed from him being a legitimately good basketball player.
He led Indiana State with 17.4 points per game, adding 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists. Avila is a legitimate three-level scorer offensively, shooting 53.6 percent overall from the field while knocking down 39.4 percent of his 3-point attempts and 80.8 percent of his free throws.
That shows just how good of a work ethic Avila possesses, as he improved his game across the board while becoming a household name. It will be interesting to see where he ends up for the 2024-25 season and beyond, as his basketball future is as bright as ever.
