Why The Houston Rockets Do The Deal
Realistically, a lot of people will question the logic of this deal for the Houston Rockets.
After all, it would be disingenuous to say that they’re a Jerami Grant away from contention. As the worst team in the NBA, they’re much further. Why target a 28-year-old they’ll have to pay next summer anyway?
Well, doing this deal sends a message to the league. It allows the Rockets to tell the NBA that they’re done tanking and ready to compete. That could benefit them eventually.
After this summer, they’ll have picked in the top three in the draft in two consecutive seasons. This trade has them determining that it’s time to start thinking about free agency, and trading for disgruntled stars. It makes them a more attractive destination.

It’s a long shot. In all likelihood, the Rockets won’t try to flip that switch until next summer, after the 2023 draft. On the other hand, if they want to get ahead of the curve, this could be a sneakily productive trade.
