Why The Detroit Pistons Do The Deal
The Detroit Pistons do this deal, first and foremost, because they whiffed on other deals.
The rumor mill has them getting better packages for Grant. Some speculate that they’ll move him to the Blazers in exchange for their seventh overall pick. Some even more ambitious folks wonder if Sacramento would trade them the fourth pick for the veteran forward.
Both of those packages feel like overpaying. At the same time, both the Kings and Blazers have unique incentives to win in 2022-23 in spite of being in the lottery. If they want Grant badly enough, they’ll take the Rockets out of the running for him.
At the same time, either team could justify standing pat. Value is value, and if they feel they’re getting shortchanged, they may not make a deal. In that event, this trade looks solid for the Pistons.
