One of the players many presumed in rumors thought to be actively pursued this NBA offseason on the trade market is Houston Rockets big man, Christian Wood. Wood has far outperformed the contract that he signed with the team as a free agent in 2020 and has an eye toward the next deal that he will sign.
Wood’s contract runs through the end of this season and there were questions about what the Rockets would do with him. Turning only 27-years old in September, Wood isn’t old by any means. But, given where Houston is in their rebuild, it was fair to question whether or not they would want to shell out a long-term contract for a player that is teetering on their timeline.
Well, it would seem that we have their answer. While getting ready to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Houston Astros game on Wednesday, Wood revealed that there have been contract extension talks between him and the team, raising the attention of the NBA rumor mill. While nothing has been finished yet, he is expecting more.
That points toward the Rockets and Wood continuing their relationship, and it is hard to blame them. Other than his age, it would be a no-brainer to re-sign someone of his skill set.

Wood has the unicorn skill set that teams are seeking out from their big men now, as he is as comfortable on the perimeter as he is on the interior. He is a two-way player that gets the job done on both ends of the court.
In two seasons in Houston, Wood has averaged 19.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.0 blocks and 0.8 steals in 31.4 minutes per game. He is making 50.7 percent of his shots overall and 38.4 percent from the 3-point line.

That is not a player you allow to leave even if there are some concerns about how perfectly he fits the current timeline. Teams find a way to make it work with talented players and the Rockets are seemingly doing that with Wood.
