Conventional wisdom would dictate that these teams have no business together. After all, they ought to share the same goals. If both organizations are focused on stockpiling young players and draft picks, why would either be interested in working with the other?

Well, conventional wisdom isn’t always applicable. Sometimes, different clubs have different philosophies about rebuilding. Market size can influence long-term strategy. So too can future draft assets. For a wealth of reasons, every rebuilding club is not cut from the same cloth.
