Making the Case: Sacramento Kings
With the Sacramento Kings now building around Domantas Sabonis at the center position, there is no longer the need to keep Richaun Holmes on his current contract.
In the short term, the Kings should look to add as much perimeter shooting impact as they can manage. While Davis Bertans is undoubtedly a bad contract, he at least provides sharpshooting and would complement De’Aaron Fox and Sabonis.
With the No. 4 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the Kings have plenty of options at their disposal. Adding another asset with the No. 26 pick would only help as they continue to re-tool.
The ideal outcome for the Kings would be that Bertans’ perimeter shooting ability is fully maximized playing alongside their stars and could later be moved as his contract plays out. More shooting would be a better use of spending than a non-shooting five that shouldn’t play next to Sabonis.

Again, if Bertans does not end up panning out, much of his final year salary is non-guaranteed in 2024-25 and the Kings could move on from him without having to wait out the entire contract.
