After an incredible run in the postseason, the Dallas Mavericks are shifting gears to the NBA offseason. With Luka Doncic being one of the top playoff performers in the league, the organization may start to push all-in and build a roster that can make a run at the NBA title.

When looking at the Mavericks’ roster, two things stand out. Luka Doncic needs more help around him, and the team needs to upgrade at the center position. Jalen Brunson took a big step forward this season, but Dallas should still be in the market for a legitimate running mate to pair with their franchise cornerstone.

One player expected to be on the Mavs’ radar this summer is Rudy Gobert. Multiple reports have indicated the Utah Jazz could make some major changes after another postseason run fell short.

While the former Defensive Player of the Year is a perfect fit in Dallas, they have no current plans on pursuing him if he is made available.

“Despite long-running speculation that the Mavericks hope to trade for Rudy Gobert, I’m told that an all-out pursuit of Utah’s All-Star center and defensive anchor is unlikely.”

Gobert would solve a lot of the Dallas Mavericks’ problems, but it’s not shocking they have no intentions of putting their hat in the race. For starters, his max contract takes up a good portion of cap space, leaving Dallas with little flexibility to improve the supporting cast in other areas.

Another factor is what it will cost to land Rudy Gobert. Along with making things work from a financial standpoint, draft compensation will likely also need to be added. Investing that much on a player who really only impacts one side of the floor is a gamble for a team attempting to build a contender.

In today’s NBA, it’s easy to find a bargain center that can fill a role and contribute. Unless they are the caliber of Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid, most big men aren’t worth paying max money. The Dallas Mavericks would be far better off pursuing a big man at a more team-friendly price tag.
