Dallas Mavericks Receive: C Richaun Holmes, F Maurice Harkless
Sacramento Kings Receive: F Davis Bertans, No. 26 Overall Pick, 2024 Second-Round Pick
In this NBA trade scenario, the Sacramento Kings would be moving on from Richaun Holmes after no longer needing him as their starting center. He and Maurice Harkless would be dealt to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Davis Bertans, the No. 26 pick, and a future second-round pick.
Due to the Stepien rule, the Mavericks would not be able to finalize this trade until after the No. 26 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft is finalized since their 2023 first-round pick is owed to the New York Knicks.
Holmes is set to earn $11.2 million during the 2022-23 season but has a 15 percent trade kicker that would raise his salary for 2022-23 to $12.9 million.
Bertans is widely considered as having one of the worst contracts in the NBA after he signed a five-year, $80 million contract with the Washington Wizards that kicked in starting in 2020-21. The upcoming season will mark the third year of the deal and pay $16.0 million.

Only $5 million of Bertans’ $16 million final-year salary is guaranteed if he plays in 75% of his team’s regular-season games in 2023-24. If he doesn’t factor into the Kings’ plans in the second year of being a member of the team, that contract structure offers help to move on.
Let’s look at the case for this NBA trade scenario from the perspective of the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings.
