New York Knicks Receive: C Deandre Ayton
Phoenix Suns Receive: F Julius Randle, 2023 First-Round Pick (NYK)
We figured we’d get the obvious package out of the way first.
The Knicks may be feeling buyer’s remorse over Randle’s contract. It’s got an annual value of $26.1 million through to 2025-26. His production didn’t merit that price tag last year. His seemingly frequent conflicts with staff and teammates didn’t help either.
If the situation isn’t reconcilable, attaching a first-round pick to Randle’s deal in exchange for Ayton might be worth the Knicks’ while. Is acquiring Randle worth Phoenix’s?
In Ayton’s absence, it’s certainly debatable. Randle is a more dynamic offensive player than Ayton due to a superior handle and better playmaking vision. He’s also a less imposing defensive force and physical presence. All things considered, they’re probably within a similar tier of player.

In other words, this is a fair deal for Phoenix if Ayton’s departure is already inevitable. They’re getting an older, comparable player and a first-round pick in return. On the other hand, what about the remote possibility that Ayton stays put?
