Phoenix Suns Receive: F Julius Randle
Placing a value on Julius Randle isn’t easy. That’s what happens when you follow up an All-NBA Third Team season with an absolute dud.
The last deal was a little easier to construct. In a vacuum, Ayton ought to be worth more than Randle and a first-round pick. NBA trades don’t happen in a vacuum. Ayton is a distressed asset.
Alternatively, so is Randle. The hodgepodge of veterans the Knicks are receiving for him here may be suboptimal. At the same time, they’re getting the rights to swap two selections with the Suns in 2023 and 2024.
Perhaps more significantly, they’re clearing their book. Crowder and Saric are both expiring contracts. Shamet’s deal runs as long as Randle’s, but at almost one-third of the cost. This trade may not be a dream come true for Knicks fans, but it’s prudent.
