It would be a bit surprising if the Phoenix Suns allowed Deandre Ayton to walk as a free agent this summer. However, it seems like there is a real possibility that occurs as they are far apart on contract numbers.

Ayton is dead set on seeking a max while the Suns’ ownership isn’t budging from their stance that he isn’t worth one. Something will have to give this offseason, as Ayton will almost assuredly land a max contract from someone.

The Detroit Pistons can easily open up max cap space and have a need at the center spot. The Portland Trail Blazers have max space as well and could use a center if Jusuf Nurkic moves on in free agency. The Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs, Charlotte Hornets, and Indiana Pacers have all been linked to Deandre Ayton in one way or another as well.

But, he will ultimately sign an offer sheet with the Pistons for the max and the Suns will not match it. Ayton will become a foundational piece in Detroit alongside Cade Cunningham and whoever the team selects with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

In the Motor City, Deandre Ayton will be afforded the chance at an expanded role offensively, something he didn’t seem likely to get with the Suns despite his excellent efficiency. He has already shown that he can be the anchor of a good defense, something the Pistons need more of.

The fit is a good one for the No. 1 overall pick from the 2018 NBA Draft and he gets the max deal that he was seeking.
