How This Trade Impacts San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs are stuck in an awkward spot. They have a solid group of young players that are competitive, evidenced by the fact that they have made the NBA Play-In Tournament both years of its existence. However, they have been eliminated in the first game both years.
As a result, the Spurs have missed the postseason three consecutive years, the longest drought in franchise history. They are going to remain competitive, but this is a team that some believe is a No. 1 scoring option away from being a playoff team.
Duncan Robinson isn’t that No. 1 scoring option, but acquiring him would bring more young talent into the mix. Robinson himself is two years younger than Doug McDermott and they would be getting another first-round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Robinson struggled by his standards, making 37.2 percent of his 3-point attempts, but that is still above average in the league. A bounce back in San Antonio wouldn’t be out of the question, as a return to 40+ percent shooting would fit in well on their roster.

The first-round pick is what is key for San Antonio in this deal. They would have assets to move up the draft board should there be a prospect they are targeting that is outside their current range. They could also use those first-round picks to bring in more established talent, pushing their reloading ahead.
Without the first-round pick, this is a non-starter for the Spurs. However, acquiring Robinson would likely also take them out of the running for someone such as Zach LaVine in free agency.

That may not be something they are willing to do before even taking a run at players atop this year’s free agency class.
