How This Trade Impacts Miami Heat
The Miami Heat are only focused on one thing and that is winning. Right now, Duncan Robinson isn’t a player that they feel can help them achieve that goal. As a result, he has seen his role minimized.
Max Strus has replaced him in the starting lineup and Victor Oladipo seems to have supplanted him in the rotation. It is hard to argue against the change being made as Robinson shot below his career numbers from the 3-point line.
If Robinson isn’t knocking down perimeter shots, he will struggle to provide a positive impact. He doesn’t offer much else outside of his shooting, as his defense is a major negative. So, the Heat move on from him, acquiring an established player in Doug McDermott.
McDermott was excellent for the San Antonio Spurs this season, connecting on 42.2 percent of his 3-point attempts, which was seventh in the league. He offers a little more diverse scoring punch as well, as he doesn’t rely solely on 3-point shooting to score the ball.

Financially, this is also a win for Miami. Doug McDermott is only owed $27.5 million over the next two seasons, while Robinson is owed more than $74 million over the next four.
While they don’t have much draft capital to offer, surrendering their 2022 first-round pick to save that kind of long-term money and seemingly upgrade the lineup at the same time is a no-brainer for Miami.

The only real negative to this move is that it would take the Heat out of the running for any stars that may wriggle free this offseason. Robinson’s contract is key to building a package without including Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler or Bam Adebayo in the deal.
