Utah Jazz Receive: G Spencer Dinwiddie, 2022 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Mike Conley
It shouldn’t be controversial to say that Mike Conley is a better player than Spencer Dinwiddie. In assessing this trade, the question is basically: how much better?
For all of Dinwiddie’s talent in terms of ball-handling and shot creation, he’s always struggled with efficiency. This season, he shot 33.9% from long distance. That’s a marked drop-off from the 40.8% conversion rate Mike Conley posted.
This Dallas Mavericks offense ought to benefit considerably from that increased spacing. Furthermore, Conley is arguably no less effective as a playmaker: the Mavericks would unequivocally upgrade at the point guard spot by making this swap.
One of the complications the Mavericks face when offering future picks is they already have sent out a lottery-protected 2023 first-round pick to the New York Knicks, which carries protections through 2025 until it conveys. However, they can trade their 2022 first-round pick this offseason.
