2. F/C Chet Holmgren, Gonzaga

A lot of eyes have been on Gonzaga during the NCAA Tournament because they have potential No. 1 overall pick, Chet Holmgren, in their starting lineup. Holmgren is hard to miss, standing 7-feet tall with a 7’6” wingspan, he is an imposing player on the court. However, there is no denying he needs to add some strength and size to his frame.

Holmgren is listed at only 195 pounds. Some of the tougher, more physical teams have given him issues throughout the season. Saint Mary’s, Memphis, Texas, Texas Tech and Alabama are some of the tougher teams Gonzaga has faced this season and all five were able to limit Holmgren’s impact.

In the NBA, the players are only going to get more physical and strong. He will need to add on weight to hang down low. Pairing him with a banger in the frontcourt that can handle that, allowing Holmgren to float around a little more, would certainly help earlier in his career.

But, there is no denying the skill that he brings to the table. He is certainly talented enough to be the top pick in the NBA with a smooth jumper that he can get off over basically anyone. Defensively, his length will be a problem for opponents as a help defender.

There is certainly enough to work with in the early going that Holmgren will have some success. But, there will certainly be some ups and downs as he gets stronger and his body fills out. Selecting Alperen Sengun in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft should not deter the Houston Rockets from selecting Holmgren should he be on the board.
