Does this trade make sense for the Sacramento Kings?
Should the Kings actually show a lot of interest in moving Richaun Holmes, not many teams will be calling Sacramento to talk about trades pertaining to the big man because there is not much of a market for centers right now across the NBA.
Just a handful of teams are looking to add a center, which is why the Kings may end up being desperate in trying to trade Richaun Holmes in the offseason.
This trade with the Dallas Mavericks is not necessarily out of desperation, but they would be taking significantly less value for Holmes than when they signed him last offseason.
Dwight Powell is nothing more than a rotational big man at this point and there really is no value in the Kings bringing in a 2027 second-round pick that has protections on it.

The trade does not make sense in terms of making the Kings better, but getting out of Richaun Holmes’ contract right now while he still has some value does make sense, and taking on Dwight Powell’s contract allows the Kings to open up cap space heading into the offseason following the 2022-23 season.
Maybe they can get more value from another team looking for a center, but this is not a trade that the Sacramento Kings should immediately overlook by any means.
