Donovan Mitchell’s Long-Term Future May Not Be In Utah

Donovan Mitchell has helped turn the Utah Jazz into one of the best teams in the NBA, but the All-Star guard has seen fractures between him and Utah’s management since he was drafted in 2017.

Between the conflicts with him and Rudy Gobert, as well as all the problems between the Jazz medical staff and his own doctors, it is not crazy to believe that Donovan Mitchell is having doubts about his future in Utah.

Should the Jazz fail to reach the Western Conference Finals yet again, there will be a lot of discussion in the offseason about what the future holds for Utah, especially since they do not have an abundance of talent on their roster.

Mike Conley and Bojan Bogdanovic are both really good players, but they are veterans that are nearing the end of their careers. Rudy Gobert is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate every single season, but his impact offensively is limited due to him only being able to finish at the rim.

Donovan Mitchell is the only source of pure scoring on this Jazz roster outside of sixth-man Jordan Clarkson, which is why other scenarios could begin to pop into his head in the offseason.

Speculation about Donovan Mitchell’s future in this league has been an on-going discussion for quite some time now and quite honestly, it is hard to believe that his long-term future will be in Utah.

Mitchell is definitely not someone to give up on challenges and while he does truly love his situation with the Jazz and the fanbase in Salt Lake City, it does seem like a bunch of “toxic” situations are beginning to stack up on top of one another.

At some point in a game of Jenga, the tower falls from pulling too many blocks out and this kind of seems like the situation we are heading towards with Donovan Mitchell.

He is not going to be traded in the offseason and is in the first year of a new five-year, $163 million contract with the Jazz, but it is hard to imagine that Mitchell will be in Utah through the 2025-26 season.

In order to contend for a title, the Jazz are going to need to add another All-Star scoring talent to their roster and that will be hard to do for a small-market team in Utah, especially given their cap situation.

Under contract through the prime of his career, Donovan Mitchell’s situation with the Jazz is certainly one to watch and keep in the back of your mind moving forward. It won’t happen today, or tomorrow, or in the offseason or possibly over the course of next season, but at some point, it is not hard to believe that Donovan Mitchell will be on the move from the Utah Jazz.
