The Memphis Grizzlies made some moves that caused people to scratch their heads in the offseason. After making a surprise run to the postseason through the NBA Play-In Tournament and earning the No. 8 seed, they operated as a team with an eye toward the future more so than improving immediately.
The front office knew something we didn’t, as the Grizzlies have been one of the more pleasant surprises in the league this season. Memphis is currently sitting pretty in the third spot in the Western Conference and looks like legitimate contenders.
They have a blossoming star in Ja Morant leading the way and a deep, talented roster behind him that are coming into their own. Jaren Jackson Jr. is putting it together in his fourth season in the NBA, putting his injuries the last two seasons behind him. Desmond Bane looks like one of the biggest steals of the 2021 NBA Draft as well.
This is a young, athletic, fun team to watch who is only scratching the surface of their potential. No one would fault management if they wanted to see how far this team could get as currently constructed. But, where is the fun in that from a fan’s perspective?
