During the NBA offseason, there was much discussion about the Dallas Mavericks seeking to add a secondary ball handler in order to take pressure off Luka Doncic.
The original target the Mavericks had in mind was Kyle Lowry, who had his sights set on the Miami Heat well in advantage of the official start of free agency. The backup plan quickly became Goran Dragic since he was included in the sign-and-trade deal that landed
Currently, the Mavericks are receiving strong contributions from Jalen Brunson, but there is a dilemma they face. Brunson is a helpful talent to have starting alongside Brunson but the bench group is left shorthanded doing so.
By making a move for Dennis Schroder, the Mavericks would have the option to start either Brunson or Schroder. Dallas would be a much deeper team as a result.

The Dallas Mavericks have a $10.9 million trade exception that was created by the trade that sent Josh Richardson to the Boston Celtics. With Schroder earning just under $5.9 million, Dallas could theoretically use the TPE.
