The Boston Celtics have made some bold moves to attempt to address the point guard position with a long-term answer in recent NBA seasons. Trading for Kyrie Irving and then acquiring Kemba Walker both proved to not be solutions.
In the offseason, the Celtics opted to move on from Walker and were so motivated to do so that included in the trade package to the Oklahoma City Thunder was the No. 16 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Boston also took on the hefty contract of Al Horford in the process.
With the current configuration of the Celtics’ salary cap situation, they currently face a situation where re-signing Schroder is going to be genuinely complicated.
There already has been speculation about Boston having to move Schroder at the NBA trade deadline essentially as a ‘cap casualty.’ He is deemed one of the ‘most likely’ players to be moved at this point.

With the Celtics currently holding a 16-18 record and being closer to outside of the play-in tournament seeding than having homecourt advantage, moving talent away doesn’t necessarily seem to be an ideal outcome. However, it could be necessary.
