How This Trade Impacts Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons need to take a long look in the mirror and accept where they are at. While head coach Dwane Casey was confident in his team just over a year ago, this is a rebuilding team. As a result, they need to think long and hard about making a trade that involves Jerami Grant.

Grant wants to be in Detroit and has a great relationship with people within the organization. The franchise loves him as well, so a trade seems unlikely, but for the long-term betterment of the team, they should consider making a deal.

This deal with the Knicks is what they should be looking for in return. Obi Toppin looks ready to break out with a bigger role. His athleticism leads to plays to get the crowd going and his energy is infectious. He still has some work to do to round out his game, but he would take off with more minutes.

Kevin Knox II has some potential, but he will never realize it with the Knicks. The Pistons could provide him with some minutes to continue his development, which has stalled being stuck at the end of New York’s bench. As an impending restricted free agent, Detroit would be getting an up-close look at him to see if he is worth keeping long-term.

The draft capital is good for the Pistons as well. It is unlikely the Knicks will finish with a top-3 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, so that will likely convey. Getting back a second-round pick they traded away, which could be in the top-three of the second round, is beneficial as well.

While this deal seems unlikely to happen given the circumstances, the Pistons getting back two players picked in the lottery, a first-round pick and a second-round pick is a solid deal for a player in Jerami Grant who has only one strong season under his belt of being more than a great role player.
