The Los Angeles Lakers thought that they were adding to their championship-ready roster by bringing in Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards. This NBA offseason trade created a big three of Westbrook, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis. To this point, the Lakers have looked anything like a team that is ready to win its second title in three years.

Westbrook spent time with the Wizards and Houston Rockets since leaving Oklahoma City. These are teams that Westbrook was able to put up big numbers on but never had a real expectation to win. In Los Angeles, it is quite the opposite. This is a roster that was expected to compete for a title without Westbrook.

Once the deal was made, the Lakers entered the season as favorites to win. Right now, the Lakers are hovering around .500 and have been inconsistent.

This is partially because of the fit for Westbrook. He is beginning to put up better numbers but as a whole, Westbrook has struggled to fit in a bit. He has played in 23 games this season and is averaging 20.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. For Westbrook, it has never been about putting up big numbers. This is a point guard who has averaged a triple-double over the course of a season four times. It has been about his ability to take care of the ball and act as a winning player.

Turnovers continue to be a problem for Westbrook. He is averaging 4.7 on the young season and is having difficulty sharing ball-handling duties with LeBron James. This has led to turnovers and bad shots, which Westbrook has been known for. He is shooting just 44.5% from the field and 30.7% from three-point range.

This is a team that has not found its identity early on. The addition of Russell Westbrook continues to be a reason why and the overall grade is not a good one when looking back.
