How This Trade Impacts Minnesota Timberwolves
If the Minnesota Timberwolves want to shake things up, this would be a pretty solid trade for them. At this stage, Dejounte Murray is a better player than D’Angelo Russell, so they would be upgrading at the point guard position.
Murray has taken yet another stride in his development this season, as he continues to thrive with the ball in his hands. He is an improving playmaker with a deadly mid-range game. That will only make his playmaking better as teams will have to respect his ability to score the ball.
Thus far this season, Russell is the better-rated defender, but Murray has an excellent track record on that end of the court. He has the length to defend both backcourt spots and could defend some players on the wing as well.
Not to be overlooked is the acquisition of Thaddeus Young. Young would help the Minnesota Timberwolves out at the power forward spot, one they were looking to upgrade during the offseason. They didn’t find a deal that worked at the time, but their patience would pay off if they landed Young.

There’s something to consider in this trade scenario — would Minnesota management sign off on another first-rounder being traded after their 2021 first-round pick was sent to the Golden State Warriors to originally land Russell? Towns’ body language has worsened as of late and it’s unclear if he’ll be able to tolerate being in Minnesota for the long haul.
