Does this trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?

Minnesota is going to have to make a big move at some point to improve their overall talent because their bench is not that impressive right now. Outside of Towns, Edwards, Russell, Beasley and Beverely, there are a lot of question marks on this Minnesota Timberwolves roster, primarily in their frontcourt.

Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid and Jarred Vanderbilt are all young talents that are still growing into their own and while Marvin Bagley III also fits in this category, you know what you are getting with the former No. 2 overall pick if you are the Timberwolves.

When he is healthy, Bagley has been productive on both ends of the court and can act as a “Sixth-Man” type of player coming in off-the-bench for them to not only provide depth behind McDaniels, but Towns as well.

Trading away Taurean Prince, who they recently acquired this offseason, and Jake Layman are definitely two moves Minnesota would be interested in making to bring in Bagley, but trading away their first-round pick in 2022 may be too much to ask.

Minnesota did not have a first-round pick this past year and they are still a young team looking to continue adding young talent around the likes of Towns, Edwards and Russell for the future. This first-round pick could be the deal-breaker, especially since there is no guarantee that Bagley would be on this roster past this season.

Seeing as they are not a contending team, giving up draft picks for a “one-year-rental” of a player does not make too much sense for this organization. In time, the Minnesota Timberwolves have a chance to build themselves into something special, but unless they know they will keep Marvin Bagley long-term, there is no reason for them to be giving up draft picks to acquire him in the final year of his contract.
