How This Trade Impacts Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics look like they need to shake things up. The front office underwent an overhaul in the offseason with Brad Stevens stepping down as head coach and moving into a general manager role. The coaching staff was subsequently changed as well, with Ime Udoka taking over as head coach.
The roster was shaken up as well, but the core remained the same. Marcus Smart was signed to an extension, adding him to the team’s core along with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. However, it looked like things had run their course with that group, and in the early going this season, it remains the same.
There were some rumors during the offseason they’d consider moving Brown for an impact player, such as Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard. Would Karl-Anthony Towns qualify as the same?
The package to acquire Towns is not cheap. Brown is an ascending All-Star, Robert Williams III is having the best season of his career and the two first-round picks are never easy to give up. But, when you are getting arguably the best young center in the NBA, you seriously consider making the deal.

Acquiring Towns would help Boston balance out their roster. They would commit to Tatum as their go-to player on the wing, allowing them to use a more traditional lineup if they so choose instead of moving Tatum to power forward.
Towns and Tatum would be a deadly offensive duo, but the Celtics would be losing something defensively. Brown and Williams are both strong defenders, while Towns has struggled at times on that end of the court.

If Boston ultimately feels they cannot reach the level of championship contender with the Tatum and Brown combo, this is a good deal for them. It is costly to add All-Stars to a roster, and any team that may move one will be asking for Brown in return.
