Does this trade make sense for Detroit Pistons?
Bringing in Dwight Powell does not really do anything for the Pistons in terms of development and they could very well look to buy him out of his contract upon arrival, but both Josh Green and Tyrell Terry do present some future value to a rebuilding franchise like the Pistons, as we mentioned earlier.
Dallas’ first-round pick in 2022 is also valuable to the Pistons, as this would give them a first-round pick in next year’s draft, something they do not have anymore since they trade their first-round pick in 2022 to the Houston Rockets with Top-16 protections on it back when Christian Wood went to Houston via a sign-and-trade.
Seeing as Detroit is likely going to finish bottom-five in the league, they will probably end up keeping their first-round pick, giving them two valuable draft assets to play around with next offseason.
Right now, the Pistons are a handful of years away from being anything special in the Eastern Conference, which is why leveraging Jerami Grant for more future value could be a smart move to make since his value is at an all-time high.

Josh Green and Tyrell Terry are two valuable assets to add to their young core, but at the same time, the Pistons can probably get a much better return from another team should they make Jerami Grant available in trade talks.
For this reason alone, this trade with the Dallas Mavericks does not make much sense because there are a lot of question marks attached to this deal. The Pistons could very well end up getting three “duds” for Jerami Grant, which is something they cannot afford to do right now.

Keeping Grant and using his value to help develop young talents is what Detroit plans on doing, that is unless they get an irresistible offer for the breakout forward.
