Luka Doncic is going to only get better and he could very well have an MVP-like season during the 2021-22 season, but right now, the Mavericks are not a title contending team in the Western Conference. Maybe they will not be either by adding Jerami Grant, but this trade certainly gives the Mavs the kind of value they need to add to their team to be a top-tier team in this league.

Kristaps Porzingis’ contract kind of limits what the Mavericks can do both in free agency and in trades at the moment, which is why they could look to move on from him in the future, but by bringing in Jerami Grant to pair with him in the frontcourt, the Mavericks would roll out a rotation of Doncic, Hardaway Jr., Bullock, Grant and Porzingis.

Overall, this is not a terrible starting-five and the Mavericks would still have guys like Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, Jalen Brunson, Sterling Brown and various centers to choose from on their bench. The Mavs need another contributor on both ends of the court and Jerami Grant has proven to be a high-level player at a combo-forward.

The Detroit Pistons are one of the youngest teams in the league entering the 2021-22 season and their longest tenured player is Killian Hayes, who was drafted 7th overall last year. They will once again finish near the bottom of the standings in the league during the 2021-22 season, but the future is bright for the Pistons.

Cade Cunningham is a potential All-Star player, Saddiq Bey has a lot of potential on the wing and Detroit has other key, young talents in Isaiah Stewart, Josh Jackson, Hamidou Diallo and others who can factor into being great talents moving forward.

Dwight Powell gives the Pistons a little bit of depth at the center position, as they only have Kelly Olynyk and Isaiah Stewart right now, and both Josh Green and Tyrell Terry are two young assets for the Pistons to add to their core for the future. Green was drafted 18th overall by Dallas last year, but did not play much during his rookie season.

Standing 6’5” on the wing and having the athleticism he does, Josh Green is definitely a player who could develop into a standout two-way player, but he is still very raw and needs a lot of developing in his outside game.

Given his explosiveness and motor, Green could fit in with other athletic, young players in Detroit like Cunningham, Bey and Stewart, especially since the Pistons do not have many young talents at the shooting guard position.

Tyrell Terry was drafted in the second-round by the Mavericks last year and has the potential to also be a factor in the future. Terry shot 40.8% from distance in college and in the NBA, he has a chance to become a very impactful perimeter shooter.

In terms of value, this trade may not be the best deal the Detroit Pistons can get for Jerami Grant should they look to trade him, but this is definitely a worthwhile trade package from the Dallas Mavericks for Detroit to consider.
