Does this trade make sense for Sacramento Kings?
The Sacramento Kings are likely going to be looking to move both Buddy Hield and Marvin Bagley III at some point during the 2021-22 season, especially if they are projecting to miss the playoffs again.
Still, they will likely look to move on from them for separate reasons. For Hield, the Kings have been shopping him around for months now, and the main reason for getting rid of him is because he is owed $61.5M over the next three seasons.
Moving Buddy Hield allows the Kings to have open cap space, critical for any team rebuilding and not in the playoffs. As for Marvin Bagley III, he is unhappy in Sacramento and wants a change of scenery. He has not been bad early in his career but could definitely be a better player somewhere else.
Hence, his value is still above-average compared to other players around the league who could become available at his position.

Kristaps Porzingis may be viewed as a “project” or “liability” to some, but if he can stay healthy, he is definitely in consideration for being a Top-40 player in this league.
At 7’3”, there is nobody in the league that can guard him in the low-post, and with his three-point shooting abilities, the Kings could really have a strong “one-two” punch in pick-and-roll scenarios. Not to mention, they would have a powerful frontcourt with Porzingis and Holmes together.
Tyrell Terry is another exciting prospect for the Kings to add to their young core of players. They do have a lot of young talent in their backcourt already, but Terry has the potential to grow into a very lethal shooter on the outside in a similar role to that of C.J. McCollum.

Now, he is not going to be the same player as McCollum, but this is kind of what his ceiling looks like in terms of a mold of a player that has been successful in the NBA.
Porzingis’ contract is a lot for the Kings to take on, but at the same time, they really are not going to be getting key free agents over the years.
Nobody is going to want to go to Sacramento willingly just to lose, which is why they need to be willing to invest salary space in proven talents like De’Aaron Fox and Kristaps Porzingis. Maybe this is a risky move for the Sacramento Kings, but it could very well pay off in making the playoffs over the next year or two.
