Does this trade make sense for Dallas Mavericks?
Moving Kristaps Porzingis seems inevitable at this point for the Dallas Mavericks, but they have to make sure they can get a good return for him; that way, they are still set up for success. This is definitely the trade since Buddy Hield and Marvin Bagley III allow the Mavericks to be a better team this year.
Dallas shot just 36.2% from deep last year, which ranked them 18th in the league. Buddy Hield alone shot 39.1% from three-point range last year and could easily help make the Mavericks a Top-10 perimeter team, especially with Tim Hardaway Jr. and Reggie Bullock next to him on the wing.
Marvin Bagley III has had a great start to his career, averaging 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shooting 50% from the floor, but his upside is limited in Sacramento. With the Mavericks, he would most likely come off the bench unless they decided to move Maxi Kleber to the bench in favor of Bagley.
Whatever his role, the Mavericks would have a young big guy who is more than comfortable running pick-and-roll sets with Luka Doncic. Bagley’s best parr about trading in this deal is that he is in the final year of his rookie contract.

If they make this trade and it winds up being a “swing and miss” on the part of Bagley, then the Dallas Mavericks would not be tied down to him long-term and they would have freed up roughly $11M that will go towards Luka Doncic’s long-term extension.
Dallas made some decent moves in the offseason, but they did not make any moves that drastically improved their chances to make a deep playoff run this year.
Trading away Kristaps Porzingis in a deal that nets them Buddy Hield and Marvin Bagley III not only gives Dallas more depth and shooting, but the key secondary talents Luka Doncic needs around him to be the best he can be. Dallas definitely improves their roster and chances to contend in the Western Conference this season by making this trade.
