Golden State Warriors Receive: G Derrick White, F Thaddeus Young

The Golden State Warriors made a variety of intriguing selections in the 2021 NBA Draft and if one of them shows some flashes ahead of the trade deadline, moving on from Andrew Wiggins’ salary could be an ideal move for the team to make.

Wiggins has played quite well since landing with the Warriors in part of the D’Angelo Russell trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. It’s just that a team who is already paying such high salaries to key players in Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson may not want to do the same for Wiggins.

The San Antonio Spurs have the salary cap flexibility to take a calculated risk in terms of trading for Wiggins. He is still young and has shown flashes of becoming a more efficient player since landing with a more stable organization.

There isn’t a clear-cut franchise player on the Spurs now that DeMar DeRozan has chosen to depart in free agency. Wiggins still has potential to achieve impressive results in the NBA and perhaps after developing for a season with the Warriors he could be ready for a larger role again.

Moving on from an expiring salary in Thaddeus Young could be the right move for the Spurs. Derrick White has lower potential than Wiggins, too, so including his deal that runs through 2024-25 could be another benefit from San Antonio’s perspective.

Let’s take a closer look and see how this NBA trade scenario centered around Andrew Wiggins could impact both the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs.
