Charlotte Hornets Receive: C Jarrett Allen (via sign-and-trade)
Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: CHA 2021 1st Round Pick (Pick #11, Post-Draft), BOS 2023 2nd Round Pick, BOS 2024 2nd Round Pick

The Charlotte Hornets are not strangers to getting sign-and-trade deals done as they did so in 2019 with the Boston Celtics involving Kemba Walker and then did so again last offseason when they acquired Gordon Hayward via sign-and-trade from Boston. They will continue to be a team to watch in rumors this NBA offseason.

Jarrett Allen could very well wind up being the latest sign-and-trade addition to the Hornets roster, especially since they have draft picks that they could leverage. With free agency beginning just a few days after the NBA Draft this year, we could very well see numerous draftees on the move before signing their rookie contracts this year.

This could definitely be the case in a trade scenario for Jarrett Allen, as the Hornets would send the rights to the 11th overall pick in the draft to the Cavaliers this year. However, getting a deal like this done could be very tricky, especially since the Cavs and Hornets would have to have an agreement in place ahead of free agency so Charlotte can draft the guy the Cavaliers want with this 11th overall pick.

Tricky… yes. Possible… also yes! We have seen deals done like this before in the league and a possible sign-and-trade scenario between the Hornets and Cavaliers is reasonable to believe. Charlotte needs a big man like Jarrett Allen and the Cavs do not want to lose any value that Allen may still hold, so there is a deal to be had here.

A four-year, $75M deal or more is definitely reasonable for Jarrett Allen at this point and this is definitely a contract that the Hornets can afford to bring in without leveraging other players. They could also bring in Allen while also re-signing Devonte’ Graham this offseason.

For a couple of draft picks, including the ones that Charlotte received from Boston in other sign-and-trade deals in the past, the Hornets and Cavaliers can reach an agreement for a sign-and-trade deal involving Jarrett Allen this offseason, but is this something that truly makes sense for both teams?
