Potential Shooting Guard Losses

While everyone is focusing on what the Dallas Mavericks will do when it comes to Kristaps Porzigis, what they should be focusing on is what they will do with their backcourt, specifically the shooting guard position.

Right now, the only shooting guard under contract for Dallas is Josh Green, who played 445 minutes in his rookie season. Tim Hardaway Jr., Josh Richardson and J.J. Redick are all free agents this summer, leaving a potentially huge hole to fill at the position.

While Victor Oladipo could be sidelined until 2022, the Mavericks would be smart to sign him to ensure they have some depth at the position for the stretch run of the season. Adding him and bringing him back after New Year’s would be like trading for a potential difference-maker at the trade deadline.

Even if Dallas retains any of their free-agent shooting guards, they will still need some depth behind them and Oladipo would present a high-upside signing.

His two-way play would be welcomed with open arms in Dallas and if he helped them win games down the stretch, he should be able to parlay that into a bigger contract next summer.
