Does this trade make sense for the New York Knicks?

Seeing as the Knicks are interested in adding a point guard this offseason and the fact that they are willing to trade both of their first-round picks, this is actually not that bad of a deal for them. Giving up Obi Toppin is something they would rather not do, but at the end of the day, he will always be behind Julius Randle in the depth chart.

Collin Sexton is just as young as Toppin and he will fill an immediate need for the Knicks, which is why this trade makes sense. Basically for the Knicks, they really need to focus on who they want to be their point guard moving forward.

They will likely look to re-sign Derrick Rose this offseason, but he is not the long-term solution for them in their backcourt. Whether it is bringing in Lonzo Ball on a long-term deal, signing Kyle Lowry to a short-term deal or putting all their chips in elsewhere, the Knicks must figure out what their long-term plan is both at the point guard position and financially before making any decisions trade-wise.

There are plenty of talented guards available this offseason, which is why this decision could potentially make or break the Knicks. Everything has been trending in a positive direction for them, so giving up one of their bright, young talents and two other first-round picks this year for Sexton may not be the best move if they are in the running to land another young guard like Lonzo Ball.

Ultimately though, from a talent standpoint, this trade does make sense for the Knicks and they would be getting a really talented player in Collin Sexton. If they are willing to sign him to a new long-term deal, this is a trade that favors New York, but if they are unsure about keeping Sexton long-term, there is no reason for them to make this trade with the Cavs.
