Why Trading For Karl-Anthony Towns Makes Perfect Sense
There is a chance that the Rockets could simply tear down their roster and focus on a rebuild. However, that might not be something that ownership wants to do. A last-ditch effort to compete in the West by trading for Towns would make a lot of sense as well.
Looking at the Rockets’ current roster, this deal would keep them very competitive. A core of John Wall, Towns, Eric Gordon, Kevin Porter Jr., and Jae’Sean Tate could be tough to beat. Houston could also look to add more talent this offseason by offering players a chance to come compete with Towns leading the way.
Granted, giving up Wood would be a tough decision for the Rockets. They are very high on his future and giving up three first-round picks along with him would be counterproductive if the franchise isn’t completely competed to winning now.
It’s a steep price, but a price that the Rockets should be willing to pay. With Towns on the roster, they would be a nearly surefire playoff caliber team in the Western Conference. The only holdup would be whether or not the Rockets think that they could add more talent after trading for Towns.
On the outside looking in, this trade would be well worth the price for the Rockets. Acquiring a talent like Towns is not an opportunity that comes around all the time. In fact, we aren’t even sure that the Timberwolves would be willing to part with their superstar big man.
Should the T-Wolves make him available, the Rockets should be working the phone lines trying to make something happen. They still have a roster that can compete and giving in now would be a mistake and set up a long rebuilding process. Karl-Anthony Towns is a name to keep a close eye on this offseason and it would not be shocking to see the Rockets pursue him if he hits the trade market.
