The Hypothetical Trade
Rockets Receive: Karl-Anthony Towns
Timberwolves Receive: Christian Wood, D.J. Augustin, 2021 first-round pick (via Portland Trail Blazers), 2021 first-round pick (via Milwaukee Bucks), 2022 first-round pick
In order to pull this trade off with Minnesota, the Rockets would have to part ways with a very talented big man in Wood and three first-round picks. The departure of Augustin would not make much of an impact on Houston’s future plans.
Despite the price that it would take to make the Timberwolves consider pulling the trigger, the Rockets should pursue this deal. There are very few players around the NBA with the skill and ability that Towns has. He can take over a game and put a franchise on his back.
Just like James Harden did during his time with the Rockets, Towns could be the clear-cut focal point of the offense. If the Rockets could put elite shooting around him, they would be dangerous. Keeping John Wall would give Towns a dynamic guard to take pressure off of him.
Let’s take a closer look at this trade for the Rockets and why it would make perfect sense for them.
