Why this trade makes sense for the Detroit Pistons
Trading Jerami Grant makes little sense for the Detroit Pistons, especially since they just signed him in the offseason, but they do get a ton of value in this trade that they probably cannot find anywhere else. In this trade scenario, the Pistons would be receiving talent that can help them now and in the future, which is hard to come by.
Again, the Pistons will likely not be trading Grant at the NBA trade deadline, but in this trade, getting Herro, Nunn and a couple first-round picks could set them up for a lot of success moving forward. Both Tyler Herro and Kendrick Nunn have been two really solid backcourt players and in just their second seasons in the league, both guys are more than capable of holding their own and being cornerstones of a franchise.
Young players and draft compensation is what the Detroit Pistons need and this trade gives them just that. Tyler Herro is 21-years-old and Kendrick Nunn is 25-years-old, giving the Pistons two guys they could add to their young core to build with for the future.

Kelly Olynyk does not offer much more than being a veteran leader this season and then freeing up some much needed cap space for the Pistons to play around with. With them not being in a position to make the playoffs this year, the best thing Detroit can do for themselves is to continue getting their young core experience and if they can add onto their young core, it would definitely make them one of the better young teams in this league.
If the Pistons are looking to gain as many future assets as possible now, then trading Jerami Grant could make a lot of sense for them, but expect to see Grant in Detroit for a long time as he is the future and the face of their franchise.
