Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G JJ Redick, CLE 2021 2nd Round Pick (via NOP), NOP 2025 2nd Round Pick
New Orleans Pelicans Receive: G Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
If this trade between the Pelicans and Lakers was to occur, it could not happen until after Feb. 20 due to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope re-signing with the Lakers in the offseason.
While it seems crazy to think about, especially after they just signed him to a three-year contract extension, it could make a lot of sense for the Lakers to trade away Caldwell-Pope. We will touch on it a little more in a bit, but instead of being tied down to KCP for the next three years, they can get Redick, who is just as good of a three-point shooter and free up cap space to spend next offseason.
Speaking of Redick, he is one of the best three-point shooters of all-time and someone who could really help this team down the stretch and in the postseason. He has struggled early on this year finding his rhythm and knocking down shots, but given how good the Lakers are at finding open shooters with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, JJ Redick could end up being a major headache for opponents come playoff time.
While there are a lot of teams reportedly trying to get in on the “JJ Redick sweepstakes,” his value is not really high right now and as a result, the Lakers could potentially pull off this “one-on-one” trade involving Caldwell-Pope.
The only question is if the Lakers are willing to trade him away because the Pelicans would probably be happy with getting KCP for Redick. With that being said, let’s take a closer look as to why this trade makes sense for both teams.
