Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Los Angeles Lakers
Overall, the Lakers will probably hold off on making any significant trades like this one, but they could actually make out quite well from this trade. KCP and JJ Redick are pretty much the same player in the sense that all they do is live on the three-point line and do not contribute in any other ways.
We all know what Redick can do from deep, as he ranks 15th all-time in made three-pointers in NBA history, which is why he would be a great fit next to LeBron James. When he has an open shot, you know the ball is going to go in, which is not necessarily said about Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
He struggled a lot last year during the Lakers championship run and while he did step up and hit some big shots, him being non-existent at times on the court almost cost them some key games. While he has been efficient this year, L.A. cannot leave their fate up to chance again and need to give LeBron the best weapons to utilize on the perimeter.
You cannot get much better from the three-point line than JJ Redick this trade deadline, which is why he would be a great trade target for the Lakers. As mentioned, the only question though is if they would be willing to absorb his $13M contract.
If they did get Redick, it would cost them a bit of money and a key role player like KCP, but they could end up with valuable cap space for next year. L.A. is in “championship mode” and are building their team year-by-year, much like every other organization that has had LeBron James. Having cap space gives them the ability to surround their future Hall-of-Famer with the best of the best in attempts to win more championships now.
While they will likely hold off on trading away a key player like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, this is actually a pretty decent trade for the Los Angeles Lakers and gives them plenty of options moving forward in terms of sustaining championship success.
