‘No Traction’ for Chris Paul Trade to Bucks
It’s no secret at this point that Chris Paul could end up being traded this NBA offseason. The Oklahoma City Thunder pulled off an impressive season, but undergoing a full rebuild is best for long-term results.
One of the more intriguing potential landing spots for Paul if the Thunder does indeed trade him is the Milwaukee Bucks. It would be an opportunity for both Paul to win his first championship, but also for an Eastern Conference powerhouse to keep a transcendent talent.
However, ESPN’s Zach Lowe reported there has been ‘no traction’ on a potential deal between the two sides. In fact, there may have not even been talks about a potential deal yet— suggesting the possibility of Paul ending up with the Bucks is unlikely.
It’s difficult for small market franchises to have hefty payrolls, especially now with the ramifications of the Covid-19 pandemic. That makes the idea of the Bucks acquiring Paul on a $38.5 million salary a tough one to pull off.
With Giannis Antetokounmpo entering the final year of his current contract, now is the time for the Bucks to withstand the burden of the luxury tax. If not, they could risk losing the two-time MVP for nothing next NBA offseason by failing to do what it takes to win a championship.
A potential hurdle for both the Bucks and Thunder to overcome in a hypothetical trade discussion is Milwaukee’s lack of draft assets and intriguing prospects. For a rebuilding team like Oklahoma City, there doesn’t appear to be a ton that would intrigue them.
It’s likely Chris Paul does end up getting traded this offseason. It’s just tough to envision it being the Milwaukee Bucks who get a deal done, unless a drastic shift in tone were to occur.
