Why the Golden State Warriors Should Do It
The Golden State Warriors had the least wins in the NBA last season. There were reasons for it— Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were injured, and the D’Angelo Russell experiment didn’t quite work out.
Still, though, Warriors owner Joe Lacob has been clear he wants to pursue titles whenever possible. Adding Giannis Antetokounmpo would certainly put the Warriors back at the top of the conversation.
Depending on the outcome of next season and whether or not Antetokounmpo would stay in Golden State, this could be viewed as a lot of picks to give up, or a steal.
For example, after the Clippers’ abysmal loss in the bubble, there was a focus on how many future picks they won’t have thanks to the Paul George trade.
This could be similar if Antetokounmpo stayed for a year and then was convinced by Pat Riley to head to South Beach in 2021.
But it would be worth the risk for the Warriors. Players such as Antetokounmpo aren’t usually available, and they should pursue it if it’s remotely possible. A trio of Antetokounmpo, Curry and Thompson would be a nightmare for opposing defenses. Teams have to respect Curry and Thompson’s range, which could open up the floor for Antetokounmpo.
Lopez is center who can stretch the floor and he’d add yet another shooter for the Warriors. He’d immediately become their best option at center, which is one of the Warriors’ biggest needs.
