Clippers can’t afford to be left empty-handed in 2021
As of now, it may be a reach to say Paul George and Leonard will depart after next season, but the mere fact that it’s possible should give the Clippers some cause for concern.
If George leaves without winning a title, it would be an extremely bad look for the Clippers, having given up so much to the Thunder.
This may depend on who the next coach is, and his view of the current roster. But the pressure on the Clippers in 2021 will be immense if they run it back with the same roster: Can they avenge the collapse of 2020? Will their chemistry issues be fixed under a new coach?
If not, what incentive would there be for George to stay? George will be 31 next season, still chasing his first NBA title. For a player who already forced his way out of Indiana and Oklahoma City in search of a winner, his ties to Los Angeles may not be enough to keep him there if the Clippers fall short of expectations again.
