George can depart after next season

Both Paul George and Leonard have followed LeBron James’ contractual blueprint (prior to the joining the Lakers) where they’ve signed short-term deals. This puts the pressure on the franchise to perform, and if it doesn’t, George (and Leonard) can leave after next season.

Considering everything the Clippers gave up to acquire George, and their fruitless result of 2020, it appears there are only two successful outcomes for Los Angeles as it pertains to George: Count on a bounce-back season in 2021, and hopefully win a championship, which would justify his acquisition price. Or, sell him to the highest bidder on the trade market, while you still have the chance.

The unique element of this story is Los Angeles is always where George wanted to be. We know he’s from the area, and we know he was connected to the Lakers in rumors for years. He’s now in LA, but with the Clippers. Still, he didn’t make the type of long-term contractual commitment that you’d expect from someone longing to get out of Oklahoma City to return home.

If the Clippers feel they’re better off pairing Leonard with someone other than George, this could truly be the deciding factor in whether George is dealt this offseason.
