1. Minnesota Timberwolves
During the 2019 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves held the No. 11 pick but made a trade with the Phoenix Suns to move up to the No. 6 spot. The move was made in order to be in position to take former Texas Tech standout Jarrett Culver.
When considering the Timberwolves’ track record in player development, it’s difficult to envision Culver making major strides in his shooting mechanics. Him emerging as an impactful enough player not only worth taking No. 6 overall, but trading up to do it, appears unlikely.
Not only could one say the Timberwolves should regret their choice to not stay in their original draft positioning to take Tyler Herro…in hindsight, a case could be made that Minnesota should have taken Cam Johnson instead of Culver, based off what we’ve seen, so far.
There is a need for the Timberwolves to have more shot creators around D’Angelo Russell and Karl Anthony-Towns. It’s difficult to envision Herro not being able to make greater contributions for Minnesota than what Culver has achieved while having the greater ceiling.
